Editorial Hair

At the sides of the head I twisted hair into a loop using gel, and clipped on thin blonde hair wefts to create the illusion of hoops, as many of the tribes I researched wore hoops as facial jewellery or around the neck and I wanted to create my own twist on this with hair, but without plaiting the hair, as most of the look already contained plaits and many other designers used plaits to resemble hoops and I wanted to be different. Although I still like this idea, if I was to repeat the look I would try to adapt this aspect so it looked more professional, from all camera angles.

I sprayed this side of the hair to add interest but to also disguise some of the silver wire that was more visible against the dark hair. If I was to repeat the look, for this shot I would ask if the model could either wear a sleeveless top or be topless, or even wear a nude coloured top so the T-shirt wasn't a major distraction from my look. I feel this would add to the tribal feel of my design. I could also continue my design down the back of the model, so it wasn't as cut off. I could maybe explore tying the ribbon round my models arms, as opposed to in a bow down the back as on reflection the bow is a bit of a distraction from the hair. I think the bow is most successful when it joins the red neck paint, rather than in some shots the paint finishes, there is a gap, then there is the bow, it just looks a bit unprofessional.

Overall, I am very happy with how the hair went, its something I hadn't tried prior to the tribal project and I really like how fun it is. However, I would stick to the original idea of covering the head in fullers earth and carving patterns into it. During the shoot I made the decision to only apply fullers earth to the front of the head, but I do feel it would have bumped up the view at the back, making it more tribal.

Editorial Shoot

I started off the shoot with the braids bent round from the back of the head, forwards. As you can see I feel with the braids in this position, the photo on the right is more successful, as you can really see the shape of the braids. However, I think the shots further down the page, were more successful, with the braids facing outwards, as the shape of the braids mirrors the models shoulders and so the image appears more balanced.

I really like this camera angle, unfortunately these pictures are slightly blurred and so don't look very professional if enlarged. I feel the hair and styling go really well together colour wise and I'm glad I practiced the look prior to the shoot, as the neck and shoulders could have been blue and I'm still not convinced that would have worked as well.

Again I think this look in hindsight could have benefitted from something more, whether it be more shading on the eyes, as the colour has faded slightly from reality in the pictures, or the crystals on the lips, or maybe I could have continued the split peas down from the forehead, round the cheekbones.

I think the editorial look benefits from having the hair at a slight angle, as it adds another dimension to the image, as opposed to just a straight on shot. However, I'm torn by this because I feel the straight on shots show off the styling more, and I did work really hard on creating and putting as much effort into the styling as the hair and makeup.

I think if I was to reshoot I would ask the model to extend her neck, so more red was visible and puff out the chest so the styling sat up better and maybe try tilting the head back and round, working the antlers, yet still having the eyes as the main focus. In order to do this I would have to add colour and depth to the eye area. I could also maybe exaggerate the brows even more than I have.

Catwalk Hair

I am really happy with the hair in this shoot, in the end I did not add the wire to the bottom braid as I did not feel it was necessary. If I was going to repeat the shoot I would maybe just try this anyway so I could see the difference and compare. The braids at the sides ended up having a dream catcher feel and the braid I pinned up over the stuffing, created another detail to the hair, that I believe on the catwalk will just make a great view for any spectator, despite where they are sitting. As you can see I coloured the backcombed hair, to give a feathery effect, to resemble the tropival birds I researched. If I were to repeat the shoot I would make these colours bolder so they could be seen from a distance, but shape wise I have created what I wanted to maybe for more wow factor, and if there was a model with longer hair, the hair height could be increased.

Catwalk Shoot

Overall, I am happy with how the Catwalk shoot went.  I think my time management could have been better as I spent quite a lot of time on the hair and consequently my tribal tattoo designs were compromised when I had to rush the final part of my look. With this being said I am very happy with my hair skills for this look as previously I have felt my hair looks havent been as interesting as my makeup designs.

This angle did not work as well because of the way I positioned the tattoos, Not only did they turn out less refined as I would have hoped, but here they have made my models shoulders appear broader and for a Catwalk look, this isn't the best idea.

If I was going to repeat the look again I would make the makeup more bold, so it can be seen from a distance by viewers of the Catwalk. for example I think the slash in the hair, though I love it, should be thicker and slightly longer, the crystals on the cheeks, which are great for a beauty look could be darker so the shape is more visible. I chose a natural lip colour because my research showed tribal women as having lovely skin and lips but if I am going to have the natural lip I think having more colour on the alluring eyes would have worked better.

I really like this pose,as I feel it conveys the thoughtful amazonian warrior that I wanted, but unfortunately during shooting there was a shadow/ some images came out blurred.

Here, I think the reveal of the neck is great, maybe I could have tried having the model hold her neck to exagerate this, however as this is my catwalk look maybe a stronger, more defined, face on angle would be more appropriate.

Above and below are my favourite images, I just think my model photographs particularly well at this angle and the overall image looks really beautiful/pure. To me it is clear I have research the African American Tribesmen and although I would make changes if I were to repeat the shoot, the hair, makeup and styling do compliment eachother, and all contribute to the successful outcome of this Catwalk Look.

I think I will take this image through to touch up slightly, and form one out of the two final Catwalk images!!
