Beginning with Native American Tribes....

Facial tattoos

I really like how interesting these face tattoos are! The cicular mark making reminds me of cells, if coloured I'd imagine them to be like artwork by Hundertwasser, I like how the focus is on the face, yet lines continue down the body to compliment the tattoos. I'm intrigued by the use of textiles and the hand touching the hair, I think this helps to make a more successful image. The beaded necklace helps to frame the face and adds importance/makes Mohave woman look more striking!

Hundertwasser lines and mark making

Admiring the colour choices of Hundertwasser - the contrast of the green and blues with red - thinking of what colours would jump out on the skin or compliment it!

Wondering how these lines could be translated on to the face and/or body??

Could achieve these fine lines with Aquacolour - less likely to smudge etc.

Are these colours Native American or Tribal?
The richness of colour and the use of shape - circles/squares - building patterns

  1. Interesting that you note the hand touching the hair. Yes it does inform how you see the image.

    Suggestion...
Try to observe the paintings see here in purely linear terms. Take away the colour.

The homework I suggested you do this week was to draw on top of images of people with a biro. Apply the designs you have constructed from the painting to the images in this way.

Then apply the linear formation you have constructed on paper to the face and body by handpainting it on.
